About Us
The Specimen Tree Company was established in 1987 by Gordon Ikin, our Managing Director, to share his passion for trees. This passion is still at the heart of our company today and it is demonstrated everyday by our experienced, qualified and dedicated staff. Trees are not just a part of our business, they are our business.
We provide a complete and holistic tree service from the birth of a tree (Nursery), through to a tree’s removal due to its old age and declining condition (Pruning and Surgery). We can guide your project through the planning stages and the granting of Resource Consent, undertake the tree removals required, provide on-site monitoring during construction, undertake plant supply and planting, and provide after-care maintenance to ensure tree establishment.
Our clients include residential property owners, landscape architects, landscape contractors, city councils, property developers, construction companies, golf courses, institutions and schools.
Contracting Works
We primarily undertake pruning/surgery and landscaping/transplanting projects throughout an area from the north Waikato to the Bay of Islands.
Delivery
Within the greater Auckland region we undertake delivery of trees from our nursery on our own trucks. Outside this area we can arrange delivery with other horticultural carriers to most locations nationwide.
Health and Safety
We maintain a rigorous Health and Safety system that is dynamic in nature, and regularly reviewed and updated.
Public Liability Insurance
We currently carry NZD$10 million of Public Liability Insurance cover.

Stuart joined The Specimen Tree Company in 1995 as a landscape foreman and was appointed General
Manager in 2002. He has a broad horticultural knowledge including tree identification and nomenclature
and extensive skills in Urban Forestry Management systems. Previous roles have included working as a
Senior Gardener at the Auckland Regional Council Botanic Gardens. He is licenced in the Quantified Tree
Risk Assessment system and has a total of 30 years experience in the arboricultural and horticultural fields.

Jeff started with The Specimen Tree Company in 2009 as a foreman in our landscape team working on the Highbrook Parklands project. He was appointed Landscape Manager in 2011. Prior to this Jeff worked in Nursery production for 27 years. Jeff has strong technical knowledge and is great in the implementation of landscape projects which have included the Wynyard Quarter upgrades, the Aotea Square redevelopment and Highbrook Parklands.

Simon commenced with The Specimen Tree Company in 1997 as an arborist in our tree surgery crew and
became the Tree Surgery Manager in 2003. He has great arboricultural skills and tree knowledge and
knows how to get the best results for both clients and their trees. Simon has had 20 years in the
arboricultural industry with some of this time spent working in England.
